Questions, answered

What people ask us before they write.

Do you take my insurance?

Each clinician is in network with some plans and out of network with others. Write to us with your plan and the clinician you would like, and we tell you in writing before your first session what applies. For Medicare and MaineCare we say yes or no for each clinician. The fees page has the details.

What is a superbill, and how can I use it?

A superbill is an itemized receipt, with the date and kind of each session, that you can send to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your plan can see. Your plan decides whether it pays, and reimbursement is not guaranteed.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We send you one before your first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

How much does it cost, and how do fees work?

We give you the fee in writing before you start, so you never learn it by phone or at the door. What sets the fee is the clinician, the length of the session and whether we bill your plan. The fees page explains the rest.

Can I use an HSA or FSA card?

Yes. Most HSA and FSA cards work like any other card. Your plan administrator can tell you whether counseling qualifies for you.

What happens in the first session?

It lasts 50 minutes, by video, by phone or in Brewer. Your clinician explains how they work, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of therapy, then asks what you would like from the time. At the end you decide together whether to continue.

How often, and for how long?

Sessions are 50 minutes, and couples sessions are 80. Your clinician sets the pace with you. We do not promise a number of sessions.

Are you licensed where I live?

Every clinician is licensed in Maine, and two are also licensed in New Hampshire. You need to be in one of those states during a session. If you are somewhere else, we cannot see you yet, and we will help you find someone licensed where you live.

What if my internet or phone signal is poor?

Tell us, and we switch you to a phone session at no extra step: your clinician calls you at the time you set. If a connection drops in the middle of a session, we call you back on the phone.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. Our messages are not monitored around the clock, so do not wait for us to answer.

What is confidential, and what are the limits?

What you share stays in the session. The law sets limits: if someone is at serious risk of harming themselves or another person, or if abuse of a child or of an older or dependent adult is suspected, your clinician may have to share information. We explain the limits in writing before you start, and we keep your records private and share them only as the law allows.

Can you see my teenager?

Our clinicians see adults, 18 and older. If your teenager needs counseling, write to us and we will help you find a clinician who sees minors, and who can explain how consent works in Maine.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give 24 hours' notice to change a session; you can do it by message. A storm, a power cut or a dropped connection does not count as a late cancellation, and we reschedule.
